Project Overview
The Charleyong Bridge replacement project is a significant infrastructure development undertaken by Transport for NSW as part of the NSW Government’s Bridges for the Bush Program. The new bridge, spanning the Mongarlowe River in Charleyong, is situated on Main Road 92, a crucial link connecting Braidwood and Nowra via Nerriga. This project was essential due to the original bridge’s structural and functional deficiencies, with the aging single-span truss timber bridge dating back to 1901.
The new construction was jointly funded by the NSW Government, which contributed $18 million, and the Australian Government, which provided $5 million.
Scope
The scope of the project included the construction of a new bridge upstream from the existing location, along with approximately one kilometre of sealed approach roads. The design aimed to eliminate tight unsealed curves and improve the alignment with Nerriga Road. The project’s objectives were to increase safety with wider traffic lanes, accommodate Higher Mass Limit vehicles, and reduce ongoing maintenance costs.
Ozcast Precast Pty Ltd was contracted to produce and deliver 300 linear metres of precast parapets, a critical component for the bridge’s safety and structural integrity. Despite the smooth production process, unforeseen bushfires in the area caused significant delays in delivery and installation, necessitating close coordination with the project team to mitigate the impact of these challenges.
Outcome
The outcome of the Charleyong Bridge project was the successful replacement of the outdated timber bridge with a modern structure that meets current safety and accessibility standards. The new bridge provides increased safety with its wider lanes and improved road approaches, supports heavier vehicles, and is expected to reduce maintenance costs over time. The timber from the old bridge was treated and recycled, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
Despite the setbacks caused by the bushfires, Ozcast’s proactive approach and collaboration with the project team ensured that the precast parapets were delivered as soon as conditions allowed, minimising further delays. The project’s completion re-established a vital connection for the local and regional communities, improving the continuity of the freight route between Nowra, Braidwood, and Canberra.
