Project Overview

On the back of their successful work across Sydney Metro’s inner west train station upgrades, Ozcast were engaged by Burley Constructions to complete a service building upgrade at Dulwich Hill Station. The structure was small in stature, but the project posed some unique challenges, able to be solved with Ozcast’s precast solutions.

Critical considerations for this project included the proximity of the building to active train tracks and having to operate in a congested suburban environment.

Scope

Ozcast were tasked with delivering two key project elements: Precast wall panels for the building exterior, and transfloor slabs to lay a foundation for a new concrete floor. Initially asked to deliver all products in the beginning of 2022, the project was paused by the client until mid-year, where Ozcast returned to production, delivering precast wall panels in June 2022.

Providing transfloor slabs eliminated the need for temporary form work and was an efficient solution to the challenges posed by the structure’s raised floor, which made traditional concrete pouring practices difficult. This approach to concrete flooring requires crane accessibility to install the transfloor slabs, but it is also significantly less labour intensive, more predictable and more budget friendly than traditional methods.

The project’s inner west setting posed restrictions on product delivery. Due to the size and weight of the truck used to transport the product, Ozcast were given a strict route to travel throughout the area. The inability to optimise their transport routes based on traffic or other conditions put an extra emphasis on the team to manage the variables that were in their control, to ensure product would be prepared and delivered on time.

Outcome

The outcome of this project was a fully upgraded service building at Dulwich Hill Station and a ringing endorsement of how precast concrete can provide agile construction solutions to unique situations. Ozcast were able to produce and deliver transfloor slabs on time to original project timelines and were able to work with Burley Construction to pick up and complete the project per adjusted timelines. This project is a testament to the flexibility that precast concrete solutions can offer, on top of budget-efficiency and aesthetic appeal.
